“The fireplace is a completely natural gathering point in the cabin, and with the chimney fan, it just works – every time.
– Stein Erik, cabin owner – Norway
We can light a fire, even while the extractor fan is running, without worrying about smoke in the room.
It brings a sense of calm and freedom that means a lot to us in our everyday life in the cabin.”

project description
Optimal chimney draught and open fire at the heart of the mountain cabin
At the top of Gol – overlooking Skagahøgdi and Gol Ski Centre – a family has built their dream cabin: a sanctuary where presence, tranquillity, and the surrounding mountains form the framework for taking a break from everyday life. The cabin is designed with a strong social focus, with an open-plan living and kitchen area at the heart of the space – where warmth and views come together.
A natural gathering point in the room is the open fireplace, which is meant to be seen, heard, and felt. However, the combination of a large fireplace and an active kitchen environment presents technical challenges – particularly in relation to chimney draught and smoke evacuation. To ensure that the smoke always exits through the chimney – even when the cooker hood is in use – the family chose to install an Exodraft RS012 chimney fan with a manual controller, EFC16.
The solution ensures a stable and adjustable chimney draught regardless of wind conditions or usage, making it possible to realise the vision of open flames and optimal indoor comfort in the family’s main living space.

the customer
Design, nature, and open fire – without compromise
The customer behind the project is a private family who realised their vision of a place where they could retreat and find peace in nature – without compromising on comfort or quality. The cabin is situated high above Skagahøgdi and Gol Ski Centre in Norway and is designed with both functionality and aesthetics in mind.
Social interaction plays a central role in the layout. A spacious living and kitchen area serves as the common hub, and it was important for the family to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A large open fireplace, with visible and crackling flames, was a key part of this vision – essential to the cabin experience.
However, the local topography and shifting weather conditions presented challenges when it came to maintaining effective chimney draught. In addition, the presence of a powerful cooker hood in the kitchen could easily create negative pressure and draw smoke into the room. It was therefore essential to find a solution that could ensure reliable performance – under all conditions.

solution specifications
Effective chimney draught – regardless of weather or ventilation
To ensure a dependable and efficient chimney draught at all times, an Exodraft RS012 chimney fan with an EFC16 manual controller was installed on the cabin’s chimney. The system is specifically designed to address the challenges that occur when a large open fireplace is combined with an active kitchen environment in a modern mountain home.
The RS012 model is sized for smaller fireplaces and wood-burning stoves but delivers strong and stable support for smoke extraction – even when natural draught is insufficient. It ensures that flue gases are effectively expelled through the chimney, regardless of changing wind directions or pressure conditions that could otherwise cause smoke to enter the living space.
In this particular cabin, the interaction with the cooker hood was a critical consideration. Without the chimney fan, the hood could easily have created negative pressure and pulled smoke from the fireplace into the room. With the fan installed – and easy manual adjustment via the EFC16 – the family can now light the fire whenever they want, without smoke or inconvenience.
The solution was chosen for its reliability, ease of use and ability to create a safe and functional environment in a home where both technical and aesthetic standards are high.

handover and results
Full control and smoke-free fire
from the very first ignition
The installation of the chimney fan was carried out as part of the construction phase and adapted to fit both the architecture and technical setup of the cabin. The solution was delivered with all necessary accessories and commissioned with a focus on simplicity and operational reliability. The EFC16 manual controller allows the user to easily adjust the draught as needed – without complex settings or technical know-how.
The result is a solution that works exactly as intended: the family can enjoy their fireplace without worrying about smoke in the living room – even when the cooker hood is running or the weather shifts. The chimney fan provides comfort and peace of mind in daily use and has made it possible to fully realise the vision of fire, warmth and togetherness at the heart of the family’s retreat.
With Exodraft’s solution, the family has gained a discreet yet essential component that supports both functionality and atmosphere – and ensures that the fireplace can be enjoyed just as it was intended.
