A special design solution

fireplace in woolladon hall

A design restriction was overcome by a Class B private property

Woolladon Hall is a beautiful Grade 2 listed property constructed of stone and cob. Much of the structure of the building has been renovated in recent years and as part of the renovations, owners, Sue and Charles, also wanted to build a traditional granite open fireplace, to complement the style of the property.

Stephen Whettem Architects of Tavistock, who managed the refurbishment of the redundant wing of the 17th Century house, were contracted to design the fireplace. Due to the ratio of fireplace to flue, the fireplace was unable to work on natural draught.

Stephen Whettem explained:

“To help overcome this design constraint we approached exodraft who were able to advise us on a solution.”

exodraft recommended a RSV fan, which discharges smoke and fumes from the fire vertically, thus allowing the builders to conceal the fan in the chimney stack for an aesthetic appeal.

“One main benefit is that the fire lights first time and every time, with minimum effort” says Charles.

Grade II buildings are “nationally important and of special interest”. English Heritage, agency of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
